Macro Monday – Jelena and lights

Macro Monday - Jelena and lights

Another close up of my Witch Hazel ‘Jelena.’ This time at night and strung with Christmas lights for the holidays.

For those not familiar with it RHS has a page written about it.

Happy Monday!

    • Thank you! Unfortunately not really, every time I read about it they say it is fragrant and when I go see other Jelenas in person… nothing. I was hoping that it was when I planted it. Some days I think that it does and then other days I think I am just crazy and making it up because I wish it did. The best one that I have found most pleasantly fragrant and has done very well is Arnold’s Promise. Do you have one that does well for you?

  1. I love it. It’s like grated orange peel. I’m not sure what it is about these witch hazels that makes them so magical. But I would love a grove of them. I can’t wait for my Helena to come out.

  3. I’m trying to find out if witch hazel grows on the Oregon Coast. After reading your blogs about it, I’m convinced that my bees would benefit from it. Maybe I can find it already established in someone else’s yard within bee range.

  4. Cool effect! I have pallida, but it only likes blooming on odd years so I don’t see anything for this winter.
For some reason I have you pegged as a snowdrop person…. sorry if I’m jumping to conclusions, but they’re all I can think of this time of year!

    • Thank you! Pallida is a very pretty one as well, actually I do not think you could go wrong with any of them. All are great. I am pretty sure that mine is blooming so early because it is on the corner of the house and gets the heat from the house. My others bloom in February that are out in the open. As for being a snowdrop person I guess yes I am but I do not really have enough for it to be considered a collection…yet. I am slowly collecting more snowdrops as funds allow. I am a everything/anything plant/bulb/shrub, no real rhyme or reason just pretty much whatever strikes my fancy. Thank you for following me! I hope you have a happy New Years!
